A bold and character-rich antique ruby doublet ring, handcrafted in 14K gold and dating to the late 19th to early 20th century.
At its center is a richly colored round-cut ruby and glass doublet measuring approximately 8.5 x 8.6 mm, displaying a deep, saturated red hue with impressive visual presence. This composite stone—formed with a natural ruby top over a colored glass base—reflects a traditional technique used during the Victorian and early Edwardian periods to enhance color and visual depth. Today, these pieces are appreciated as part of the history of gemstone craftsmanship.
The ring itself is substantial, weighing 6.61 grams, with a broad face measuring approximately 13mm in height. The mounting is entirely hand-fabricated, featuring hand-formed prongs and softly carved shoulders that give the piece a strong yet refined presence. The warm tone of the 14K gold, with a subtle rose hue, complements the richness of the center stone beautifully.
A personal engraving inside the band adds a layer of history and sentiment, while the larger size (approximately 10.75) lends itself well to a unisex or antique men’s ring fit.
The ruby and glass doublet remains in its original antique setting and continues to present beautifully, displaying a vivid deep red appearance with impressive size and presence. The stone currently exhibits slight movement within the mounting due to age-related wear to the setting/prongs, though it remains seated within the setting under normal handling and retains excellent visual appeal when worn.
The mounting itself is a particularly appealing example of late Victorian to early Edwardian jewelry craftsmanship, with substantial gold construction and hand-fabricated details that have survived remarkably well. Many collectors appreciate such pieces for their historical integrity and original construction.
Future repair or restoration of the prongs may be desired depending on the buyer’s preference for long-term wear. #90 #A
