The stone displays three colors: blue, green, and yellow. Blues and purples are the hardest to find, while red and green are the most common. The stone has been covered with either a clear lacquer or a clear quartz cap to protect it from drying out. The dark backing seen on the underside of the ammolite triplet is natural shale, the original host rock of the fossil from which it was quarried. Care should be taken when cleaning this protected fossil to avoid exposing it to harsh cleaning chemicals.
Ammolite, a rare and captivating organic gemstone derived from the fossilized shells of ancient ammonites, stands as a testament to nature's artistry, formed over 70 million years ago in the prehistoric seas of what is now Alberta, Canada. Unlike traditional gemstones mined from the earth, ammolite is an opal-like material created from aragonite layers in ammonite fossils, exhibiting a mesmerizing iridescence that shifts through a spectrum of colors - red, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, indigos, and violets, depending on the angle of light. #A
