The sapphire displays a soft violetish-blue hue with semi-translucent clarity, allowing the star effect to remain visible and dynamic under a variety of lighting conditions. Fine natural star sapphires of this scale—approaching 23 carats—with a centered and clearly articulated star are increasingly scarce, particularly in original period mountings.
Framing the center stone are ten diamonds totaling approximately 1.00 carat, set into bold, sculptural platinum shoulders. These diamonds appear to be primarily early full-cut stones, with several exhibiting transitional to old European-cut characteristics, including higher crowns and broader facet structures typical of pre- to mid-20th century cutting styles. Graded in the near-colorless range (H–I) with very high clarity (VVS2–VS1), they provide a lively brilliance that contrasts beautifully with the velvety glow of the sapphire.
The mounting itself is substantial and expertly constructed, with a flared shank, raised shoulders, and an open gallery beneath the sapphire—hallmarks of hand-fabricated platinum work from the late Art Deco to early Retro period. The ring has been tested as platinum and, while unmarked, is consistent with approximately 900 fineness, a standard alloy used in fine jewelry of this era.
Based on its design, craftsmanship, and diamond cutting style, the ring is best dated to circa 1935–1945. According to the consignor, it has been passed down through multiple generations, further supporting its mid-20th century origin.
An independent insurance appraisal completed in November 2021 assigned a replacement value of $9,900.
With its impressive scale, rare natural phenomenon, and strong period design, this ring stands as a distinctive and enduring statement piece—equally suited for collectors of vintage jewelry or those seeking a one-of-a-kind signature ring.
