This mid-40s square Lord Elgin dress wristwatch features a mechanical manual wind-up Elgin 556 movement, considered one of their higher-grade wristwatch calibers with 21 jewels and adjustments. Some watches by the Elgin Watch Company were called "Lord Elgin", a name reserved for their higher-quality, luxury line of watches, designed to be the best in the collection and featuring higher-jeweled movements than standard Elgin models.

The rectangular 24mm(w) case, manufactured by Apex, is crafted with a 14 karat yellow gold-filled case, bezel, back and crown. To complete the luxurious look for this dress watch, there are 14 karat yellow gold fancy, carved lugs and a black square dial with gold numerals and a gold second-hand for the sub-dial at the 6 o'clock position. The minute and hour hands are luminescent.

Unlike the sapphire or mineral glass crystals used for modern watches, the older watches used plastic or acrylic crystals. These were shatter-resistant, but also softer and more prone to scratches. The crystal on this watch does have small scratches after eighty-five years. The crystal could either be replaced or some watch aficionados say that scratches can be buffed out with a special polish. Maybe Google can elaborate on the special polish. 

Lastly, the watch has been outfitted with a new black leather band that measures 16mm in width, tapering to 13.5mm near the end.

The watch is considered to be in very-good to good vintage-condition, displaying minor overall wear. The watch has been tested and found to meet expected timekeeping standards, plus or minus a few minutes a day, typical of a watch this age.
