This rare antique
ring is an outstanding example of early 20th-century craftsmanship by Osty
& Barton, a renowned jeweler with an exceptional reputation—made more
meaningful by the fact that Charles Ostby, one of the firm’s founders, perished
aboard the Titanic in 1912. Pieces attributed to this maker are scarce, and
antique cameos in this good condition are especially sought after by collectors
of antique gold jewelry and classical cameos.
The front and
shoulders of the ring are crafted in solid 14K rose gold, richly colored and
sharply detailed. The band was made in 10K yellow gold. The mixture of 14K and
10K gold was a typical turn-of-the-century artisanal method, ensuring
durability without sacrificing the artistry on top. Two hand-carved sardonyx
cameos are set into opposite sides of the ring. One depicts Helen of Troy, the
other Paris of Troy, both rendered in beautiful high-relief profiles. Both
carvings show excellent contrast between sardonyx layers. The Paris cameo has a
small loss to the nose, which doesn’t reduce its display value but is noted for
accuracy.
The combination of
antique dual-portrait cameos in good condition, along with the beautifully
carved shoulders of the ring in 14-karat rose gold featuring traditional Osty
& Barton motifs—clean, architectural, and unmistakably handcrafted—makes
this piece highly collectible. The cameos and the mounting design give it a
strong sculptural presence, making it a standout piece for display or to wear.
