Founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1864, Elgin National Watch Company designed and manufactured the mechanisms for their pocket watches. This vintage 1940s mechanical pocket watch by Elgin has been tested and found to be in working order.
The movement grade for this watch is grade 574 which is a classification system for pocket watches that indicates the quality and characteristics of the movement, such as: size 16S, model 20, 17 jewel movement, 5 adjustments and an open face movement configuration.
The watch design features a white porcelain dial, a second-hand sub-dial, and a 10K rolled gold case by the Illinois Watch Co., that measures 50mm wide and has a screw off back.
The mechanism for this watch is a 17 jewel mechanical movement that requires daily winding. Pocket watches are generally stem-wound or key-wound, this watch is a stem-wound watch. On a stem-wound watch, the watch is wound by turning the winding crown, almost always in a clockwise direction. The winding wheel is usually equipped with a ratcheting mechanism, so the watch only winds in one direction; the other direction is just "ratcheting back" to make it easier to wind.
