2.29ct Citrine .34ct Ant Hill Garnet 14K Yellow Gold Articulated Pendant

DESCRIPTION..
This skillfully crafted two-piece, articulated, 14 karat yellow gold pendant is set with one 13.5mm x 7mm, 2.29ct., pear-shaped yellowish-orange natural citrine gemstone and one 4mm, .34ct., round brilliant natural ant hill red garnet gemstone. Pendant measures 1.75"(l) x .625"(w). #90, #A.

The artisan for this piece shared with me the origin of the name "ant hill garnet", such as the one used in this piece. I found it quite fascinating, and perhaps you will, too.

Some gems derive a large portion of their appeal because they are found in an unexpected locality or have an unusual origin. This particular red garnet derives its name because they are found on and around the margins of ant hills. The ants encounter them while excavating their underground passages, and in order to rid their passages of these inconvenient obstacles, the ants haul the stones to the surface and discard them. The rain washes the garnets clean and moves them down the flank of the ant hill, where they can accumulate in large numbers. This concentrates the little gems and makes them easy for people to collect. Their brilliant luster and red color contrasts strongly with the surrounding soil. Source: Geology.com
